The Families and Schools Together (FAST) program is a school-based collaborative, family-focused program. Parents and professionals work together to create stronger, healthier families and community for early childhood, elementary and middle school-aged children. Outcomes of the program include:
- Better school performance
- Increases in positive child behavior at home and school
- Decreases in parental stress and social isolation
- Increases in family cohesion
- Positive family communication
- Parental involvement in school and the use of community resources
The core of the program involves eight-to-10 multi-family meetings held weekly at the school. Positive interaction for families is facilitated by a collaborative leadership team comprised of a parent, a school representative, a community-based counselor and a drug and alcohol education representative. The program aims to strengthen the bonds within and between families and their community.
The FAST model is designed using the concept of parent empowerment as an underlying objective of each activity. When parents feel empowered, respected and valued as partners in the process of strengthening their family, they can become primary prevention agents for their children.
