"I love what I do. It keeps me young. When you are
a Foster Grandparent, you are doing something for the future, and you
get back all the love you give." - Foster Grandmom Mary Marinari
The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is a pairing of low-income
elderly, over the age of 60, with special-needs children. Currently, Family
Services has more than 140 caring men and women who volunteer 15 hours
per week, 40 weeks a year. These Foster Grandparents give love, guidance,
tutelage and the wisdom from their years of experience to children at
more than 50 sites.
The Foster Grandparent Program brings countless benefits
to both the Foster Grandparents and the children with whom they interact.
The children are developmentally delayed, physically handicapped, abused,
neglected, delinquent, learning disabled, or were born to mothers who
were addicted to drugs. Through the pairing, the children increase their
academic skills and enhance their self-esteem. They also learn to cope
with their disabilities and special problems. At the same time, the program
allows the older volunteers to remain active and involved in their communities.
